Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
