Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
